The Pre-College Initiative (PCI) program stimulates interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. The goal is to encourage students in grades K–12 to attend college and pursue technical degrees.
Sponsored by the Silver Spring (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and its philanthropic arm, the Metropolitan Kappa Youth Foundation (MKYF), the Wheaton Knights Chapter of NSBE Jr. is a student-led organization that engages under-represented students in activities designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, while encouraging teamwork, relationship building and the development of leadership skill development. As such, our program shares in the mission of the national parent organization “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community”.
Parents and students are invited to learn about our program which affords students with opportunities to engage with STEM professionals and academics, and gain valuable knowledge and experience through participation in regional and national STEM competitions including:
• Engineering Design Build and Robotics (VEX)
• Ten80 Racing
• Try-Math-A-Lon (TMAL)
• The Annual NSBE Conference.
Our program is currently administered at Montgomery County’s Wheaton High School in Silver Spring, Maryland and is open to Wheaton High School students. For more information, the MKYF NSBE Jr. program chairman is Mr. Howard Nicholas.
