The SSAC Book Award Program
Established in 1983
Bobby Works
Under Silver Spring Alumni Chapter’s (SSAC) 7th Polemarch, Vandy Miller, the chapter began its annual Book Award Program. Esteemed SSAC member Bobby Works observed that excellent Montgomery County, MD African-American high school students were not receiving adequate recognition for their achievements.
He led the effort to establish the first Book Award in 1983, and subsequently expanded the program to all Montgomery County high schools. For over 35 years, the chapter has presented an outstanding book by an African American author to an African American student at every Montgomery County high school. Currently, the chapter presents Kindle readers containing a selected e-book to deserving students.
Since its inception, the Book Award Program has given an award to an outstanding senior student from every High School in Montgomery County, MD and continues to serve the community in the name of Achievement.
